It was a hunt that spanned from Ossington to Leslieville, but when Michelle Gunn and Kelly Power discovered 164 Davenport, a narrow three-storey Victorian with high ceilings and sun-drenched windows, it was without a doubt, their address.
Had someone whispered to them in a Branksome Hall alcove, “Psst, one day, you two will open up a Yorkville bridal boutique.” It would have been hard to imagine. But that’s exactly what happened. Gunn and Power (Geez, they should have opened a law firm with those last names!) formed a friendship in grade nine at Branksome, followed one another to Dalhousie University and likewise, got married this past year. It was their collective journey to the altar that hatched the idea of Mrs. Bridal Boutique.
Having searched relentlessly for a wedding dress in Toronto, Gunn gave up and flew to NYC. While in Manhattan, she was introduced to a variety of designers, with mid-range price points, that weren’t available in Canada. Mrs. is exactly what the girls wanted when they were frantically dress shopping: A charming space, a comfortable experience and affordable luxury designer dresses. That’s what they found at desirable Ave and Dav.
“It’s close to three subway stops: Bay, Bloor and Rosedale. There are florists, jewelers, photo studios and nice spots to have lunch: You can park your car and make an afternoon or day of it!” Says Power. (Let’s be honest, when shopping for a wedding dress with your daughter, or mother, you need a break for lunch.)
It is indeed a stunning location with clean and pleasant decor that is both calm and inviting. Designers exclusive to Mrs. include Elizabeth Fillmore, Junko Yoshioka and Ugo Zaldi but brides can also find recognizable names like Nicole Miller and Elizabeth Dye. Gowns range from $695 to $7,995 and Mrs. also carries Hanky Panky lingerie, glittery clutches and jewelery. Oh, and we hear that there is a dress that is so very Kate Middleton.
